Pediatric Dental Filling: When It’s Time For?

pediatric dental filling

We all know when it’s time to get a filling. As adults, this is a very low-stress situation for us. We simply sit back and let the dentist do his work. When a child needs restorative work, it’s more of a hassle. So when a dentist says your child needs pediatric dental filling, it’s important to get the treatment done as soon as possible to not compromise the smile.

When It’s Time for a Pediatric Dental Filling

At some point in time, your child is going to need to have dental work done. This work must be completed even when you are extremely careful about dental hygiene and keep up with all the needed preventative care. It’s time to understand the signs that dental work may be needed and learn how we can help make this a pleasant process.

Let’s Describe a Dental Filling

A dental filling is easy enough to understand. A filling is placed into the cavity, a small, rotted hole in the tooth typically made up of gold, silver, or porcelain. It’s the most common disease in children because they often snack on sugary treats and practice worse oral hygiene than adults. When we ignore the problem, we may set our child up for having more severe conditions. A child may be in need of a root canal and can possibly lose a tooth.

Pay Attention to the Signs That Restorative Dentistry Is Needed

It all starts as a little white mark that’s found on the child’s tooth. As time goes by, this little white mark gets larger and extends to the deeper layers of the tooth. When this damage is done, it’s very common to have pain upon drinking and eating.

If your child starts to tell you about pain upon eating or drinking, it’s time to seek out a dentist to fill or remove the cavity.

What the Appointment Might Entail

It’s easy enough to repair a cavity. It’s much better than letting the whole tooth rot. The dentist will first drill out the decayed matter and fill it with the appropriate filling material. In most cases, a dentist will reach for tooth-colored composites to fill a child’s tooth. It’s the appropriate material to choose both for health and aesthetic reasons. The decay will be removed, and a fresh, new filling will be put in place.

We understand that not all children enjoy having a dental procedure done. Sometimes they require help to get through it comfortably. It’s especially important to help special needs children have a comfortable cavity filling. Sedation dentistry might be necessary to help the child feel at ease while getting the procedure done. There are many options to choose from. It would be our privilege to discuss these options with you.

How Long Will My Child’s Filling Last?

A filling can last for a very long time after treatment is rendered. It’s important to understand just how long that is. Many children keep baby teeth filling until it falls out. You can expect a good filling to last from age six to thirteen. Be sure to choose the type of filling that will last a long time. The good filling should stop the decay from progressing and keep a child’s smile healthy.
